Blocking Spam Comments in WordPress aka No more pharmaceuticals

I love WordPress and I love that I can have two way communication with readers who become writers, but an open system means there is some extra garbage to be dealt with like spam comments.  What I am about to share with you is the most simple step you can take to fight those comments.I am sure if you have been blogging for more than 2 months you’ve noticed  that you’re well loved.  At least by online pharmaceutical companies who love to spam comments at you.  It’s such a headache that some people abandon their blogs all together.   So do this step now and rid yourself of grief.

Go to the Presentation tab in your WordPress admin area and click on it.  Now from the sub menu click the tab that says “Discussion”  scroll down this page and at the bottom where there is a field to block any comments from IP addresses or with certain words in them add the following.  You can just cut and paste my list:

xanax
Lexapro
tramadol
Lipitor
Phentermine
soma

Hit the update button.  Blamo!  98% of your spam is gone.  The rest is a minor annoyance.

  • Thanks for this post.

Another method for eradicating spam on blogs can be used in conjunction with this method. I use a captcha from botproof.com that stops all automated comments posted by ‘bots’ by including a captcha that bots cannot read (a pixelated graphic that constantly changes to confuse the bot).

When I installed this on my blog it cut me down from 8-10 spam comments per day to about 1 genuine comment every couple of days.

LOL, the problem I’m having now is someone leaving comments in a foreign language on my english language blog… researching how to block his I.P. address now.
