Search engine optimization experts and Web site designers go together like peanut butter and chocolate. Here’s the thing, yesterday afternoon I was asked to look at a photographer’s Web site by a mutual friend. Even before I knew the URL I started hunting around. I had a unique first name and a city and with that his site should have popped up right away. When it didn’t I knew there were serious search engine optimization problems.
When I finally saw the site, after the URL was forwarded to me, it was a beautiful site. I am always kind of jealous when I see a good photography or other artist site because who doesn’t love to look at these images. I mean of course other than search engines.
In this case there were no unique, identifying words, nope not one. Every meaningful word was in the form of an image. From my perspective giving someone a beautiful site like this, is kind of like chaining them to a 100 pound ball of gold which is theres to keep and then pushing them over the side of a boat into the ocean.
Of course in reality the problem of images is just one issue. How is a designer not trained in SEO supposed to know how to research keywords, appropriately name title tags, optimize anchor link text, build a site with an optimized navigation structure? They aren’t and you shouldn’t expect them to, but if you want to show up in the search engines you better make sure they are only one component of your Web site development team.
